Overview

Jacques Cousteau called the Sea of Cortez "the world's aquarium" — a semi-enclosed sea between Baja California and mainland Mexico that contains more marine species than almost anywhere else on earth due to its mix of cold Pacific upwelling and warm tropical water. Kayaking between the Espíritu Santo island group in the southern Sea of Cortez — a 60–90 minute panga ride from La Paz — gives access to sea lion colonies, whale shark snorkelling, manta ray encounters, and deserted white sand beaches with no facilities. The standard route covers Espíritu Santo and Partida islands: 20–30km of paddling per day on calm water between beaches shaded by cardón cactus and palo verde trees, camping in coves where California sea lions surf in the shore break and bark through the night. The snorkelling off Los Islotes is among the best in Mexico — the resident sea lion colony approaches snorkellers and plays in the bubbles. Water temperature peaks at 28°C in August–October; winter months (December–March) see 18–22°C with clearer water and reliable whale watching (blue and fin whales in the Cortez). Several La Paz outfitters run 3–7 day guided trips with full equipment, food, and camping gear. Independent kayakers can rent from various outfitters. November–April is the optimal combination of temperatures and whale activity. Summer (June–September) is fiercely hot (air 40°C) and quiet; the whale sharks of La Paz Bay arrive with the plankton from roughly October to April.
