Overview

Haida Gwaii — formerly the Queen Charlotte Islands — is an archipelago 100km off the northern British Columbia coast, separated from the mainland by the treacherous Hecate Strait and belonging to the Haida Nation, whose culture survived here while most of the Pacific Northwest coast was transformed. The outer islands of the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve are accessible only by kayak or small boat, and the paddling conditions are among the most demanding on the Pacific Coast. The classic route through Gwaii Haanas covers 150km over 10–14 days, paddling between uninhabited islands dense with old-growth Sitka spruce, stopping at abandoned Haida village sites (Skedans, Tanu, Ninstints) where mortuary poles still stand in the forest — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wildlife is extraordinary: humpback whales surface alongside kayaks, black bears forage the shoreline, and Steller sea lions haul out on the outer rocks. Open-water crossings up to 10km are necessary on the outer route — plan around weather windows, paddle with a guide on first visits, and carry a VHF radio and EPIRB. The Hecate Strait is notorious; the outer coast less so, but fog and Pacific swells are genuine hazards. Book guided trips through one of the small number of licensed Gwaii Haanas operators — visitor numbers are capped and an orientation session is mandatory. July–September is the window; June is possible but cold. Fly to Sandspit via Vancouver.
