Overview

Kenai Fjords is calving-glacier kayaking with the full Alaskan supporting cast. A water-taxi from Seward runs you down Resurrection Bay and drops you on a gravel beach in Aialik Bay; for the next days you paddle the ice line — holding a respectful half-mile off Aialik or Holgate glacier as they drop apartment-sized slabs with a sound like artillery — between camps under the Sitka spruce. Sea otters raft in the kelp with pups on their chests, Steller sea lions bawl from the rookeries, and on the good days a humpback surges through a bait ball or an orca pod threads the channel past your bow. Cold water is the discipline: a capsize here is a genuine emergency, so drysuits are standard and most parties go guided unless they hold solid rescue skills. Weather can pin you on a beach — carry a spare day's food and a VHF, and use the bear canisters religiously. June to August. Around £2,500 for a five-day guided expedition with water-taxi drops out of Seward, itself a spectacular two-and-a-half-hour drive from Anchorage.
