The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota contains over 1,000 lakes connected by historic portage routes used by Ojibwe peoples and French Canadian voyageurs for centuries. Paddling point-to-point routes over a week, carrying the canoe over short land bridges between lakes, and camping on granite shorelines where wolves howl at night creates the quintessential North American wilderness experience. No motorboats are permitted in most of the wilderness.
