Overview

Crossing the Salar de Uyuni — 10,582 sq km of perfectly flat salt at 3,656 m — on foot over three days is one of the most disorientating experiences in travel: no horizon, no shadow, no depth, just white. The edge effects of the salt flat's geometric polygon cracks, the Isla Incahuasi cactus island in the middle, and the mirror effect after light rain transform the landscape repeatedly. Nights camping on the salt under the Milky Way at altitude are unforgettable.
