Mount Roraima's 2,810m summit plateau anchors the triple border of Guyana, Venezuela and Brazil, and the Guyanese approach is the wild way in. From Georgetown you charter a light aircraft to the Akawaio village of Phillipai, then spend days with local guides cutting through mossy forest and river crossings to the base of the Great Prow — the 450m overhanging quartzite wall first climbed by Joe Brown and Hamish MacInnes's 1973 expedition. Waterfalls pour off the rim into cloud below. Be clear about what you are buying: there is no walking route to the top from Guyana. The plateau's only non-technical line is the La Rampa ledge from Paraitepui in Venezuela's Gran Sabana, so treat the Guyana side as a jungle expedition to the mountain's foot, or a big-wall objective for climbers. It rains most days even in the December-April dry season; waterproof everything twice. Budget around £1,800 for the week including the Phillipai charter, village fees and guides. Permissions come through the Akawaio community, and a satellite communicator is non-negotiable.
