Overview

The Mamirauá Reserve, upstream of Tefé where the Solimões meets the Japurá, is the Amazon at high concentration: the largest protected flooded forest on earth, home to the white uakari monkey found nowhere else, pink river dolphins that surface beside your canoe, and caimans whose eyes stitch the night water with torchlight. From the floating Uakari Lodge, community guides paddle you into drowned várzea forest where you drift at canopy height among squirrel monkeys and hoatzins. Seasons transform the place. High water (roughly April-June) means silent paddling through the treetops; low water (September-November) exposes beaches, concentrates wildlife along the channels and brings jaguars to the margins — Mamirauá has quietly become one of the better places on earth to glimpse one. Either is superb; pick the experience you want. Access is a one-hour flight from Manaus to Tefé, then a boat transfer. The lodge model funnels income to local communities; around £2,200 for a week all-in from Tefé is typical, plus yellow fever vaccination and malaria precautions.
