Lake Malawi — the third largest lake in Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — contains more species of freshwater fish than any other lake on Earth, including hundreds of endemic cichlid species that colour the shallows like a freshwater Great Barrier Reef. The lake is warm year-round and bilharzia-free in designated areas. Cape Maclear in Lake Malawi National Park offers snorkelling, kayaking, and diving. Island camping on Mumbo and Domwe Islands — no electricity, no piped water — is the best available off-grid lakeside experience in Africa.
