Victoria Falls runs two different shows. February to May the Zambezi is in flood and Mosi-oa-Tunya — the smoke that thunders — earns the name, a 1.7 km curtain whose spray soaks you from half a kilometre away. August to December the river drops and the adventure season opens: Devil's Pool on Livingstone Island, where you swim to a natural rock lip on the very edge of the 100 m drop; full-length rafting through the Batoka Gorge's Class V rapids; and the 111 m bungee off the 1905 Victoria Falls Bridge with the gorge boiling below. Base in Victoria Falls town (Zimbabwe) or Livingstone (Zambia) and get the KAZA UniVisa so you can cross freely — the widest falls viewpoints are Zimbabwean, Devil's Pool is Zambian. At full moon, book the after-hours entry to watch the lunar rainbow arc through the spray. A Chobe day trip into Botswana, 80 km away, adds the world's densest elephant population.
