Overview

The Waddington Range is what British Columbia looks like with the difficulty turned all the way up: Mount Waddington itself rises 4,019 m straight out of coastal rainforest valleys, and the maritime storms that hammer the range bury its glaciers in some of the deepest snowpack on the continent. Ski touring here means glacier travel from the first hour — you fly in by helicopter or ski plane from Bluff Lake or Bella Coola, establish camp on the ice, and ski descents measured in thousands of metres with no lifts, no huts and no other parties. The catch is the weather window. The same Pacific systems that deliver the snow can pin a team in camp for days, so build slack into the itinerary and carry full crevasse-rescue and avalanche kit you know how to use. This is expedition skiing for experienced glacier travellers only. Around £4,000 per person covers the air charter, guide and camp logistics for five days; February to April gives the most settled cold-snow conditions.
