Overview

The Canadian Rockies reward skiers who earn their turns. The classic week is the Wapta Traverse: four days hut-to-hut across the Wapta and Waputik icefields from Bow Lake to Sherbrooke Lake, staying at the Bow, Balfour and Scott Duncan huts beneath St Nicholas Peak, with glacier travel and whiteout navigation between them. Add day tours at Bow Summit and around Lake Louise, where cold continental snow keeps powder dry for weeks after a storm. The catch is the snowpack. The Rockies run shallow and faceted — a weaker, more avalanche-prone pack than coastal ranges — so transceiver, probe, shovel and the training to use them are entry requirements, not suggestions, and many parties hire an ACMG guide. Check Avalanche Canada's forecast daily and book Alpine Club of Canada huts months ahead. February to April gives the best mix of daylight and stability. Budget about £3,000 for a guided week including huts; heli-skiing add-ons in the Columbia ranges to the west cost that again by themselves.
