Overview

The lower Omo Valley concentrates more distinct living cultures than almost anywhere on Earth: Mursi, Hamar, Karo, Dassanech, Arbore and more, each with its own language, dress and ceremony along a river that has sustained them for millennia. Travel is by 4WD out of Arba Minch or Jinka with local guides, and the encounters are the journey - a Hamar bull-jumping initiation with its whipcracks, bells and a young man running the backs of cattle into adulthood; the Karo painting themselves in chalk above a great bend of the Omo; the Key Afer weekly market where the valley's peoples trade goats, honey and gossip. Done well, with community guides and unhurried village time, it is among the most powerful cultural journeys travel can offer. Done badly it becomes a zoo of camera fees thrust through car windows, so choose operators committed to long stays and fair, agreed payment - and always ask before photographing, carrying small birr notes for the per-photo fees that are the local norm. The dry months, roughly September to February, keep the dirt roads passable.
