Overview

The churches of Tigray are carved into the faces of sandstone towers, and reaching the finest of them is a climb of faith in both senses. Abuna Yemata Guh is the one that changes people: a barefoot pitch up handholds polished by centuries of priests, a ledge above a drop of well over 200 m, then a low door in the cliff — and suddenly you stand in a church attributed to the 6th century, its domes swirling with vividly preserved painted saints, dry mountain air having done what no conservator could. Local scouts rope nervous first-timers; the priest turns the pages of a goatskin bible by the light from the door. Base in the Gheralta towns of Hawzen or Megab for Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor, and add Debre Damo — rope ascent, men only — towards Adigrat. October to February is dry and clear, with cool climbing mornings. Around £800 for a week with a driver-guide and church scouts. Check FCDO guidance carefully before booking: Tigray is emerging from the 2020-22 war, and access and safety must be verified against current conditions, not guidebooks.
