The trip begins with the best commute in skiing: a ski-plane out of Talkeetna that threads the granite gates of the Alaska Range and sets you down on the Kahiltna Glacier with three weeks of food and fuel. Base camp life at 2,200 metres runs on the near-24-hour daylight of April and May - you can ski corn at midnight if the freeze is right - and the terrain is effectively endless, from warm-up classics around Control Tower and Kahiltna Dome to serious lines on Mount Frances and the flanks of Hunter and Foraker for teams with the skills. Denali's West Buttress traffic passes through, but ski parties mostly have the side glaciers entirely to themselves. Two disciplines keep you alive here: crevasse protocol (roped, always, even on tracked glacier) and patience, because flat light and storms can pin camp for days and the plane only returns when Talkeetna Air can see the strip. Everything is expedition logistics - National Park Service registration, waste kits, sleep systems rated to minus 40. Eighteen days with glacier flights, food and shared guiding runs about £5,000 excluding travel to Alaska; the memory of an untracked first descent under midnight alpenglow is permanent.
