Overview

Erg Chigaga is the Sahara that Morocco keeps quiet: some 40 km of unbroken dunes rising to around 100 m, reachable only by camel, foot or 4x4 across the stony hamada beyond M'Hamid, where the tarmac ends. The classic trip walks in over three days with a camel string carrying camp — you ride when you tire — arriving as the low sun sets the dune sea glowing orange, then pink, then deep violet before the stars switch on with no light pollution for a hundred kilometres. Nights are spent in Berber camel-hair tents with tagine cooked over embers; the silence between the drumming is total. It is a different proposition from Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, where day-trippers arrive by coach — out here you may see no other group at all. October to April is the season: summer temperatures pass 45°C and most camps close. Winter days are warm but nights drop near freezing, so pack a proper insulating layer. Count on roughly £400 for five days from a Marrakech pickup — a long day's drive over the Tizi n'Tichka pass and down the kasbah-lined Drâa valley gets you to M'Hamid.
