Cycle from the Pindaya Caves — a sacred Buddhist complex of 8,000 Buddha images in a limestone cave above a lake, reached by escalator or a steep stone stairway — south to Inle Lake through Pa-O and Shan highland villages. The route descends from 1,180 m through tea and sesame farming communities on quiet mountain roads rarely travelled by tourists. The Pa-O people wear distinctive black turbans and traditional dress; Sunday markets at Heho and Kalaw draw hundreds of highland minority groups. Check current travel advisories.
