Overview

Attempt Khan Tengri (6,995 m; 7,010 m with its ice cap) — the marble pyramid of the Tien Shan and the most northerly 7,000 m peak on Earth. The classic line from Base Camp on the South Inylchek Glacier climbs the flank of Peak Chapaev to the West Col at around 5,900 m, then follows the exposed west ridge to a summit that burns pink at sunset when the marble catches the low light — the mountain's name means 'Lord of the Skies'. It is a serious undertaking: fixed lines on loose rock, serac and rockfall hazard low on the route, and storms that pin parties in high camp for days. Most expeditions fly into Base Camp by helicopter from Karkara; the alternative is a 3-4 day trek up the glacier moraine. July and August are the only realistic weather windows, and even then the weather turns back more parties than technical difficulty does. Acclimatisation rotations on Chapaev's shoulder set up the summit push. From around £4,500 with helicopter shuttle, base camp services and Kyrgyz logistics included — a fraction of the price of a comparable Himalayan peak, which is exactly why strong alpinists keep returning to the Tien Shan.
