Overview

Kodiak brown bears are the largest brown bears on Earth — big males push 600 kg after a good salmon year — and the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, covering two-thirds of the island, holds roughly a bear for every two square miles. The trip is pure Alaska theatre: a float plane from Kodiak City sets down on a remote river or lagoon, the pilot cuts the engine, and you spend the day at a respectful distance while the salmon run boils around the bears — cubs learning technique, big boars claiming the best riffles, bald eagles cleaning up the scraps. July to September tracks the runs (sockeye and pinks first, silvers later). Your operator's briefing on positioning and behaviour is the safety system, so take it seriously. Photographers want 400 mm or more and rain protection for everything — Kodiak's weather is famously sodden, and fly-out days do cancel, so build in slack. Day trips run about £600 a seat; a multi-day lodge package with daily fly-outs is where the £4,000 budget goes, and it buys the densest concentration of giant bears anywhere.
