Overview

The Historical Way is the inland spine of the Rota Vicentina network: some 230 km from Santiago do Cacém to Cabo de São Vicente, walked in a dozen village-to-village stages through the cork-oak dehesa of the Alentejo — Europe's quietest farmed landscape — before the route bends to the coast and finishes at the lighthouse on mainland Europe's most south-westerly cliff. You walk between whitewashed towns like Cercal and Odemira through eucalyptus and umbrella pine, on tracks that carried pilgrims towards the cape's shrine long before hiking was a word. Storks nest on chimneys and sea cliffs alike, and in spring the verges are absurd with cistus, lupins and orchids. The practical notes: stages run 15-25 km with luggage transfer widely available, the red-and-white waymarking is excellent, and accommodation in the smaller villages is thin — book ahead in spring. March to May and September to November are the seasons; summer inland is brutally hot. Around £500-700 covers a week of guesthouses and dinners, depending on how many stages you walk.
