Under the Yucatán's scrub jungle lies the longest underwater cave system on Earth — Sac Actun's surveyed passages exceed 350 km — and the cenotes are its skylights. Drift down through the lily pads of Dos Ojos and you hang in water so clear the divers ahead seem suspended in air, laser-blue light shafts cutting the cavern gloom. In The Pit, the deepest cenote in Quintana Roo, you descend through a hydrogen-sulphide cloud at 30 m that lies like ground fog over the ancient debris cone. Some passages shelter Maya offerings and Ice Age megafauna bones exactly where they came to rest. Know the line you are crossing: cavern diving — daylight visible, guided, within recreational limits — is open to any certified diver with a guide, but true cave penetration demands full cave training, redundant lights and gas, and absolute line discipline; the rules are written in fatalities. Base in Tulum or Playa del Carmen; November to April brings dry-season logistics, though the caves themselves are clear year-round.
