Overview

Wrangell-St Elias is the largest national park in the United States — six times Yellowstone, bigger than Switzerland — with a permanent population you could fit in one bus. The gravel McCarthy Road ends at a footbridge; beyond it, the ghost copper town of Kennecott perches above the Root Glacier, where crampon-shod day hikes wander among turquoise melt pools and moulins. That is the accessible edge. The real park is behind it: fly-in traverses across Dall-sheep ridgelines and glacier systems the size of English counties, where you will not cross another boot print for a week. Self-sufficiency is absolute — river crossings, grizzly protocol and food storage are on you, and the bush pilot who drops you off is your only exit, so build weather slack into the pickup plan and carry a satellite communicator. June to August is the season; expect rain regardless. A guided 8-10 day fly-in trek runs to around £3,000 including the air taxi from McCarthy or Nabesna; the Root Glacier day version costs a fraction of that and gives a real taste.
