Karakol is the anti-Alps: a Soviet-era resort at the eastern end of Issyk-Kul where £30 buys a day's lift pass, the pistes empty into larch glades of untracked powder, and the Terskey Ala-Too rears 5,000 m peaks behind the top station. An hour east, the village of Jyrgalan has reinvented itself as a freeride base — snowcat and horse-supported touring onto ridgelines that drop 1,000 m through consistently cold, dry snow, with guesthouse dinners of laghman and honey tea waiting at the bottom. The value is extraordinary but the infrastructure is thin: avalanche forecasting barely exists, so travel with a guide who knows the snowpack, carry full rescue kit, and treat every off-piste line as unpatrolled backcountry — because it is. Bring cash in som (cards work almost nowhere beyond Bishkek) and expect minus 20 °C mornings in January. £1,500 covers a five-day guided package including transfers from Bishkek; January to March is the season, with February usually bringing the coldest, driest snow.
