Overview

The Andamans are Indian territory 1,200 km east of the mainland, and their reefs collected the isolation dividend: hard-coral gardens, 20-30 m visibility in season, and fish biomass most of Asia lost decades ago. Fly to Port Blair, ferry to Havelock (Swaraj Dweep), and dive the classics — Dixon's Pinnacle boiling with trevally and snapper, Johnny's Gorge with its resident hawksbills and rays, and schools of bumphead parrotfish grazing the coral like bison. The trophy is Barren Island, India's only active volcano, reached by liveaboard or a long fast-boat day when seas allow: mantas cruising past underwater lava fields and black-sand slopes falling away into blue. November to April is the season, January to March the sweet spot; Barren crossings depend on settled weather, so book flexibility rather than promises. Permits are straightforward on arrival, but tribal-area and island restrictions are real and strictly enforced — the dive operators handle the paperwork. A 3 mm suit is plenty in 28°C water. Around £1,500 for the week including a liveaboard leg — cheap for diving this good anywhere on earth.
