Montenegro owns the most dramatic stretch of the Via Dinarica's White Trail, and a week here delivers the 1,200 km route's greatest hits without the thru-hike. Base first in Durmitor National Park: the Black Lake under Međed's cliffs, the summit scramble of Bobotov Kuk (2,523 m) with half the Dinarides at your feet, and the lip of the Tara Canyon — at around 1,300 m the deepest gorge in Europe, with rafting below when your knees want a day off. Then jump south-east for the trail's wild finale in the Prokletije, the Accursed Mountains along the Albanian border, where the karst turns vertical and the villages still measure visitors per week. Infrastructure is charmingly uneven — mountain huts, katuns (shepherd summer camps) that will feed you cheese and rakija, and village guesthouses — and so is the waymarking: carry the official GPX tracks and expect the trail to think for itself between valleys. June to September, with July the wildflower peak. Around £600 for the week — the best-value serious mountain walking left in Europe.
