Chile Huilo Huilo Bioreserve

Overview

Huilo Huilo is a 100,000-hectare private reserve of Valdivian temperate rainforest around Neltume in Chile's Los Ríos lake district — an ecosystem so wet and green it reads as jungle, beneath the glacier-capped cone of Mocho-Choshuenco. Trails wind between 40-metre coigüe trunks and tree ferns to the Salto Huilo-Huilo, where the Fuy river detonates into a basalt bowl; guided treks climb towards the volcano's ice cap, and dusk walks go looking for pudú — the world's smallest deer — crossing the paths. The reserve also runs South America's most significant huemul programme, breeding Chile's endangered national deer for rewilding. Stay in Neltume village guesthouses or, if the budget stretches, the reserve's celebrated fantasy lodges — the waterfall-topped Montaña Mágica is the one from the photographs. November to March is the driest window, and it still rains — this forest exists because it rains, so pack accordingly. Around £900 for a week with lodging and guided volcano and canopy days. Fly to Valdivia or Temuco, then three hours by road via Panguipulli.
