Alentejo is slow walking under Portugal's biggest sky: cork oaks stripped glowing terracotta to the waist, sheep bells, whitewashed villages, and wine estates that treat a dusty walker like a returning cousin. String a week between quintas around Évora and the Alqueva — the walled hill village of Monsaraz floating above Western Europe's largest reservoir, tastings at estates such as Esporão, and a megalithic detour to the Almendres cromlech, millennia older than Stonehenge. Nights under the Alqueva Dark Sky Reserve end with the Milky Way at full brightness. If you want drama to bookend the pastoral, finish on the Rota Vicentina's Fishermen's Trail between Porto Covo and Odeceixe, where storks nest on Atlantic sea stacks above empty surf beaches. Go in March-May for wildflowers or September-October for the grape and cork harvests — high summer regularly passes 40°C and the shadeless plains do not forgive it. Around £700 for a week of guesthouses, estate dinners and luggage transfers. The most civilised trek in this catalogue, and unapologetic about it.
