Pilanesberg fills the ring of a 1.2-billion-year-old volcanic crater two hours' drive from Johannesburg, and the circular geography does the work for you: game concentrates around Mankwe Dam at its centre. Get to the Mankwe hide before dawn and watch the day assemble — white rhino easing down to drink, elephant bulls shouldering through the thornveld, brown hyena loping home along the shoreline. All of the Big Five are here, and the network of tarred and good gravel loops is fine in a standard hire car, which is what makes this the best-value self-drive safari in South Africa. Come in the May-September dry winter, when the grass is low and sightings stack up at the water. The catch is the temperature swing: mornings start near freezing in an open vehicle, then climb to shirtsleeve warmth by ten, so pack proper layers, not just khaki. Book Manyane or Bakgatla camps well ahead for school-holiday weekends. Around £400 per person covers a week of shared car hire, park entry and self-catering chalets — a fraction of private-reserve rates for much of the same wildlife.
