Overview

Snæfellsjökull is the glacier-capped volcano Jules Verne chose as the door to the centre of the earth, and it presides over the whole Snæfellsnes peninsula — visible from Reykjavík across Faxaflói on clear days. The guided ascent, on crampons and rope or by ski-touring in spring, climbs from the Jökulháls track to the 1,446m summit craters, where the view runs from the island-flecked sweep of Breiðafjörður to the lava coast at your feet. Build the week around the peninsula's greatest hits: the basalt arches and bird cliffs at Arnarstapi, black-pebble Djúpalónssandur with its shipwreck iron, and Kirkjufell's absurdly photogenic cone near Grundarfjörður. The glacier is crevassed and only sensible with a guide — book from Arnarstapi — and the season is short: firm spring snow beats late summer, when bare ice and opening slots can close the route. Weather cancels more attempts than fitness; hold two possible summit days. Around £800 covers a five-day self-drive with one guided glacier day; two hours from Reykjavík, no permits needed.
