Overview

Island-hopping the Canaries by bike and ferry is a volcanic grand tour in shirtsleeve weather while northern Europe shivers. Tenerife brings the queen stage: the grind from sea level to 2,300m in the Teide caldera — among the longest continuous road climbs in Europe, finishing in a lava moonscape beneath Spain's highest peak — plus the hairpin madness of the Masca gorge road. Gran Canaria's interior coils around Roque Nublo like a velodrome designed by geology; Lanzarote adds wind-scoured laps through Timanfaya's lava fields; little El Hierro offers the emptiest circuits of all. The trade winds are the tactical layer — plan loops so the wind blows you home, not out — and altitude turns Teide's heights cold even when the coast reads 24°C, so carry a shell for every big descent. Fred Olsen and Armas ferries take bikes free or nearly so, which makes the logistics genuinely easy. November to April is the sweet spot, which is exactly why the pro peloton winters here. A week with apartments, ferries and bike hire runs about £1,400.
