Overview

The Georgian Caucasus compresses more drama per day of walking than almost anywhere in Europe. From Stepantsminda, under Mount Kazbek's 5,047m glaciated cone, the hike to the Gergeti Trinity Church puts the iconic cliff-top silhouette an easy morning away; stronger days continue to the Gergeti Glacier moraine, or over to the Chaukhi massif via Juta — the 'Georgian Dolomites' — and into the flower-filled Truso Valley with its towers and mineral springs. A marshrutka along the Georgian Military Highway from Tbilisi reaches the trailheads for a few lari. Kazbek itself is a serious glaciated climb staged from the Betlemi Hut area at 3,650m — achievable for fit trekkers with a guide and proper acclimatisation, but it is mountaineering, not hiking. What catches people out lower down is Caucasus weather: fierce afternoon build-ups and snow lingering on the passes into July. June to September is the season. Georgia remains superb value — guesthouses with dinner for £25-30 — so £600 funds a generous week including a local guide for the bigger days.
