Overview

Cycling between Nairobi and Arusha turns safari country into something you feel in your legs: the long descent off the Rift Valley escarpment, Maasai herders waving you through cattle crossings, and Kilimanjaro floating above the Amboseli plains as you grind across the dust. Wildlife comes to you — elephants crossing the road at dawn, zebra grazing the verges, giraffe necks above the acacias. Be realistic about the format: you cannot cycle inside most national parks, so good operators ride the Maasai group ranches and conservancy land on the park fringes with a support vehicle, swapping to game drives for Amboseli itself. That mix is the trip's strength — village nights and boma visits happen precisely because you arrive by bike. Heat, corrugated dirt and punctures are the daily tax; ride a mountain bike with serious tyres. June-September and January-February dodge the rains. Around £1,800 for a supported week including park fees is fair; add malaria prophylaxis and comprehensive travel cover, because rural medical care is thin.
