Overview

Gros Morne packs the strangest geology in eastern Canada into one park. On the Tablelands you walk on the earth's mantle — rust-orange peridotite where almost nothing grows — while across Bonne Bay the Long Range Traverse crosses a different massif entirely: a trailless plateau of tuckamore, bog and caribou, reached by boat to the head of the Western Brook Pond fjord, where you climb a steep gully out of 600m cliffs and navigate by compass for four days towards Gros Morne mountain. Parks Canada treats the Traverse seriously: reservations and a compulsory route-finding briefing are required, and mist that erases every landmark is what actually catches parties out — GPS confidence and bog-proof gaiters earn their weight. Moose and black bears are common; caribou make the plateau feel Pleistocene. July to September is the window. Budget about £1,200 including the boat drop, permits and nights in Rocky Harbour either side; add a day's drive north for the Norse site at L'Anse aux Meadows.
