Overview

Kafue National Park is Zambia's biggest and emptiest park — the size of Wales, with a fraction of the vehicles that work the Luangwa — and the Kafue River is its spine. A canoe safari drifts you silently down broad, fig-lined water where the engine noise that normally announces humans simply never comes: elephants keep drinking as you slide past, malachite kingfishers work the reeds an arm's length away, and fish eagles call from the dead trees. What matters is hippo etiquette — your guide reads the pods, hugs the shallow inside lines, raps the hull to announce you, and gives crossing channels an unhesitating wide berth. Days end at simple fly-camps on the bank: bucket showers, firelight, and a soundtrack of hyena and Pel's fishing owl. Add game drives on the Busanga Plains in the park's north — floodplain lion country with Zambia's best cheetah odds — to round out the week. The dry season, May to October, concentrates game on the river and keeps channels navigable; October is hottest and best for density. Packages run out of Lusaka (a five-hour transfer or short charter flight) at roughly £2,200–2,800 for a week all-in. Malaria prophylaxis and a soft bag under 15kg for the charter are the practical notes people miss.
