Overview

Denali National Park has almost no trails — that is the point. Rangers issue backcountry permits by unit quota, you step off the single park road, and everything from there is your own navigation: braided river bars, tussock tundra, caribou paths that dissolve, and glacial creeks best crossed early while snowmelt is low. The reward is walking country where a grizzly on a ridgeline two kilometres away is your only company, with the 6,190-metre bulk of Denali filling the southern sky whenever the cloud allows — it hides two days in three. A classic week works the units around Wonder Lake and the Muldrow Glacier moraines, the mountain doubling itself in the lake on still mornings. This is not a trek to a climbers' base camp — expeditions fly to the Kahiltna Glacier — but a self-directed wilderness loop in the mountain's shadow, and the quota system means you may meet nobody between bus stops. Logistics are pleasingly analogue: permits in person at the Backcountry Information Center, bear-resistant food containers compulsory and lent free, and the camper bus drops you anywhere along the road. June to August is the season; rivers and mosquitoes both peak in July. Around £1,800 covers the week from Anchorage — the wilderness itself is nearly free.
