Overview

The Mürren–Gimmelwald via ferrata is the Bernese Oberland's signature wire: 2.2 kilometres traversing the rim of the Lauterbrunnen valley, much of it on staples and ladders bolted to a cliff that drops sheer to the valley floor. The crux is a Nepal-style three-wire bridge over the Sefinen gorge with the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau filling the horizon — committing but well protected, and free to climb with your own kit. Over the hill at Kandersteg, the Allmenalp via ferrata adds a steeper test piece with ladders beside a waterfall and a cable traverse above the valley. June to September is the season; outside it the routes are iced or stripped. Afternoon storms build fast on the Oberland walls, so start early and be off the wire by two. A via ferrata set, harness and helmet are mandatory — rentable in Mürren or Kandersteg for about £25 a day. Base in car-free Mürren, reached by cable car and mountain rail, and rest days sort themselves: the Schilthorn, the 72 waterfalls of the Lauterbrunnen valley floor and the Grütschalp balcony path. Budget around £1,200 for five days — Swiss hut and hotel prices are the real exposure.
