Overview
The Kerala backwater network stretches 900 kilometres through a labyrinth of lakes, canals, and rivers parallel to the Arabian Sea coast, traditionally navigated by rice boats called kettuvallam. A multi-day houseboat journey from Alleppey through the Vembanad Lake to Kumarakom passes toddy tapper villages climbing coconut palms, Chinese fishing nets at Kochi, and the unique church at Chambakulam. This is an intimately gentle journey through one of India's most culturally layered landscapes.
