Overview

The Trans Canada Trail — the Great Trail — stitches together some 28,000 kilometres of pathway from the Atlantic to the Pacific and Arctic oceans, but the section most worth a dedicated trip is the Sea to Sky Trail: 180 kilometres from Squamish's coastal rainforest up past Whistler to D'Arcy, threading beneath the granite wall of the Stawamus Chief and the glaciers of Garibaldi Provincial Park. Day extensions to Garibaldi Lake and the Black Tusk — the volcanic plug that anchors every photograph of the park — turn a ten-day traverse into genuinely alpine walking. Snow lingers on the high sections until late June and returns by October, so July to September is the realistic window, and Garibaldi backcountry camps sell out weeks ahead in summer — book before you fly. This is serious bear country: carry spray on your hip, not in your pack, and expect a mix of singletrack, gravel and short road links rather than continuous wilderness.
