New Zealand Fiordland Kayaking

Overview

Paddle through Fiordland National Park — one of the wettest places on Earth, averaging 6-8 m of annual rainfall — through Milford and Doubtful Sounds where hanging waterfalls create their own microweather, and bottlenose dolphins escort kayaks through the fjords at dawn. Doubtful Sound (three times longer than Milford) has less boat traffic and greater wilderness character. The four-day Milford Track Great Walk ends at Sandfly Point on the fiord and can be combined with a kayak return. The fiord's black coral trees grow unusually close to the surface due to the fresh water layer suppressing light penetration.
