Overview
The Greater Caucasus Range in northern Georgia contains some of the finest trekking terrain in Europe, with the Svaneti region's mediaeval defensive towers rising from permanent glacier-fed streams below 5,000-metre peaks including Shkhara at 5,193 metres. The Mestia to Ushguli trek passes through villages recognised as UNESCO World Heritage Sites where the tower-building tradition continues. The Georgian hospitality tradition of toasting guests with Rkatsiteli wine is inseparable from any visit.
