Tierra del Fuego End of World Trek

Overview

Tierra del Fuego National Park is where the Andes finally give up and slide into the sea: a five-day base of walks from Ushuaia through moss-hung lenga and nire forest, past beaver ponds and peat bog, to coastlines where the Beagle Channel glitters toward Chilean islands and, beyond them, Cape Horn. The set pieces are the Senda Costera's shell-midden coves -- Yamana people lived here for millennia -- and the grunt up Cerro Guanaco (970 metres) from Lago Acigami, whose summit unlocks the whole southern archipelago in one gasping panorama. At Bahia Lapataia a wooden sign marks the end of Ruta 3; the road's other end is in Alaska. Weather is the whole game: four seasons an hour and wind always, so carry full waterproofs and gaiters for the bog sections. November to March gives seventeen-hour days, with condors riding the ridgelines all summer. The park is 12 kilometres from Ushuaia by shuttle; entry is about 15 pounds a day and the designated campsites are free. Get the End of the World stamp in your passport at the little post office by the bay.
