Overview

Socotra has been adrift in the Arabian Sea for six million years, and roughly a third of its plants exist nowhere else. Trekking the Diksam Plateau you camp beneath dragon's blood trees -- umbrella-crowned, crimson-sapped, found only here -- then drop into the sheer Wadi Dirhur canyon and finish on the blinding dunes at Detwah Lagoon near Qalansiyah. Bedouin drivers and goat-track guides run the logistics; nights are wild camps under some of the darkest skies you will ever see. Access is the crux: effectively one weekly charter flight from Abu Dhabi, booked through a licensed Socotri operator who also arranges the Yemeni visa -- count on 1,400-2,500 pounds for ten days excluding the flight. Go between October and April; the June-September monsoon brings winds that historically cut the island off entirely. Mainland Yemen's war has largely spared Socotra, but check FCDO advice, carry cash (there are no ATMs) and expect basic everything -- that is the price of the most alien landscape on Earth.
