Overview

Kamchatka is what the planet looks like while still under construction: a peninsula of some 300 volcanoes, 29 of them active, where you trek across lava fields that steamed into existence within living memory. Treks from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky circle the accessible giants - Avachinsky's cone, Gorely's chain of craters, Mutnovsky's ice-choked fumarole gorge - while helicopter days reach the Valley of Geysers and the Uzon caldera, and the ambitious eye Klyuchevskaya Sopka, Eurasia's highest active volcano at around 4,750 metres and in eruption more often than not. The nightly ritual is a soak in a thermal river while an ash plume catches the sunset. Brown bears are everywhere - Kamchatka holds one of the densest populations on Earth - hence the armed escort that accompanies every group. July and August are the only reliable trekking months, and even then you get four seasons daily, with itineraries rewritten around eruptions and fog: the helicopters fly perhaps two days in three. Costs are dominated by those helicopters - a 14-day trek-based expedition runs about £4,000, more with multiple Valley of Geysers flights. Russia's visa and access logistics have grown far more complicated in recent years, so verify the current situation with a specialist operator before paying deposits.
