Overview

The M41 Pamir Highway is the cyclists' rite of passage. From Osh's Silk Road bazaar you climb onto a 4,000-metre plateau where yaks graze against snow peaks, cresting the route's high point at the Ak-Baital pass (4,655m) before the strange deep blue of Karakul lake. Then comes the stretch riders talk about for the rest of their lives: days along the Panj river gorge with Afghanistan a stone's throw across the water, villages and donkey paths mirroring your road on the far bank. The Wakhan Valley detour beneath the white wall of the Hindu Kush adds hot springs, ruined forts and homestays where dinner is whatever the garden grew. Altitude and washboard do the damage: acclimatise in Osh or Murghab, gear low, and expect 60 to 80 kilometre days to feel heroic. June to September is the window - outside it the plateau is genuinely arctic - and you need the GBAO permit alongside your Tajik e-visa, plus enough cash for the whole route, because working ATMs between Osh and Khorog are near-mythical. Homestays at a few pounds a night keep 18 days to roughly £1,200 with food and permits. A water filter, four-season sleeping bag and spare spokes are the kit that earns its weight.
