Cut in 1907 as a lifesaving trail for shipwrecked sailors on the "Graveyard of the Pacific", the West Coast Trail still behaves like a rescue route: 75 kilometres of ladder towers, hand-cranked cable cars, surge channels and calf-deep mud along Vancouver Island's wildest shore. The rhythm is what hooks people. Forest boardwalk gives way to a tidal-shelf walk beneath sea stacks, then camp on sand at Tsusiat Falls, where a freshwater cascade drops straight onto the beach. Grey whales blow offshore; wolves and black bears patrol the tideline at dawn. The tide table is the variable that catches hikers out: several beach sections are impassable above half tide, and misjudging them means hours pinned against the cliffs. Parks Canada caps numbers, so book your permit the day reservations open in January; the trail operates May to September only. Budget roughly £700 including the permit and ferries, the famous crab shack at Nitinaht Narrows, and buses to the Pachena Bay or Gordon River trailheads. Allow six to eight days, train with a loaded pack, and respect the route's Nuu-chah-nulth guardians whose territory it crosses - evacuation rates hover around one hiker in a hundred.
