Overview

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park is the largest national park in the United States, encompassing four major mountain ranges with nine of America's sixteen highest peaks. The Chitistone and Nizina canyon routes follow Native Athabascan travel corridors through a wilderness larger than Switzerland. Grizzly bears, Dall sheep, and wolverines share the tundra above the historic Kennecott copper mines. Fly-in access from McCarthy is half the adventure: bush planes drop you on gravel bars with a pickup date and nothing else — carry everything, tell someone your route, and build in a weather day for the flight out.
