Wakhan Corridor Trek

Overview

The Wakhan is where the Pamir and the Hindu Kush stare at each other across a river you could throw a stone over. Travelling the Tajik side of the corridor — the practical option — you follow the Panj upstream from Khorog through Ishkoshim to Langar, with Afghanistan a field's width away the entire time: mud-brick villages, donkey trains and 7,000 m Hindu Kush summits stacked behind them. The set pieces en route are Yamchun Fort, an ancient citadel high above the valley, the hot springs of Bibi Fatima just beyond it, and the Buddhist stupa at Vrang — layers of Silk Road history in a day's drive. Beyond Langar the road climbs onto the high Pamir toward the Khargush Pass (4,344 m) and, with an extra permit, the Zorkul reserve — a lake at over 4,100 m with Marco Polo sheep on the slopes above. Treks from villages like Langar up to the summer pastures give the corridor's best walking. Everything runs on the GBAO permit (arranged with your Tajik visa), cash and a hired 4WD with driver — shared from Khorog if you are patient. July and August are the window; nights are cold at altitude year-round. Reckon on £2,500 for 18 days including vehicle share and homestays at £10–15 a night.
