Overview

The Bibbulmun Track runs roughly 1,000 km from Kalamunda in the Perth Hills to Albany on the Southern Ocean, waymarked the whole way by yellow triangles bearing the Waugal, the rainbow serpent of Noongar tradition. The walking is never technical but the landscape keeps changing: jarrah and marri woodland in the north, the giant karri forests around Pemberton, the red tingle groves of the Valley of the Giants near Walpole — some of the tallest flowering trees on earth — and finally a coastline of granite headlands and empty white beaches where sea eagles patrol. Purpose-built three-sided shelters with rainwater tanks and sleeping platforms sit a day's walk apart, free and unbookable, so a thru-hike needs a tent only as insurance. The variables that matter are water and heat: tanks can run low by late spring, and summer (December–February) is genuinely dangerous walking weather with bushfire risk — go August to November for wildflowers or April to May for cool stability. An end-to-end takes six to eight weeks with resupply in trail towns like Dwellingup, Balingup, Pemberton, Walpole and Denmark. Budget about £5,500 including town nights; snake gaiters earn their place from October.
