Hemavan · Sweden
The Kungsleden's southernmost section, 78 km from Hemavan to Ammarnäs through the Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve — one of Europe's largest protected areas — is the quiet end of Sweden's King's Trail. While the crowds head north for Abisko and Kebnekaise, five days here cross open fell plateaux and the glacier-carved trench of Syterskalet beneath Norra Storfjället's 1,768 m summits, on boardwalks over cloudberry bogs and bridges over rivers running tea-brown with peat. Golden eagles work the thermals, and Vindelfjällen shelters brown bear, lynx and one of Scandinavia's healthiest arctic fox populations. STF huts space the days evenly — Viterskalet, Syter, Tärnasjö, Serve, Aigert — selling basic provisions and firing lakeside saunas, so with a sheet liner and card payment you can walk hut-to-hut with a light pack. The Tärnasjön section, threading wooden bridges across an archipelago of lake islands, is the stretch nobody forgets. July to September is the season: earlier, the fells still hold snowfields; late August adds blueberries and subtracts mosquitoes. Both trailheads have bus links and Hemavan has an airport. Around £1,400 covers huts, hut food and the celebration dinner in Ammarnäs.
