Overview

Cycling from San Pedro de Atacama through the Salar de Atacama — the world's driest desert and largest lithium deposit — to the Bolivian salt flats of Uyuni combines dramatic desert scenery with extreme altitude. The route crosses geysers at dawn, flamingo lagoons tinted pink at sunset, and the infinite white mirror of the Uyuni salt flat. Roads are rough; altitude from 3,500–5,000 m demands acclimatisation. Winds in the afternoon are fierce.
