Overview

Rinjani, the 3,726 m volcano that dominates Lombok, packs more drama into three days than treks three times its length. From Sembalun the trail climbs through savannah grass to the crater rim at 2,639 m, where the ground drops away into a caldera holding the turquoise lake of Segara Anak and the smoking young cone of Barujari. The summit push leaves camp about 2 a.m.: the final ridge is two steps up, one slide back in volcanic scree, and then the dawn detonates — Bali's Agung to the west, Sumbawa's Tambora to the east, and the crater lake 2,000 m below your boots. Descending into the caldera earns you a soak in the lakeside hot springs before the long haul out to Senaru through cloud forest alive with ebony leaf monkeys. Book a licensed trek organiser in Sembalun or Senaru — porters carry camp and cook astonishing food off two gas rings — and check the park is actually open: Rinjani closes each rainy season (roughly January to March) and after significant seismic activity. April to October is the window; about £600 buys a good three-day package. Bring genuine warm kit — rim camps are windy and near freezing before dawn.
